Manuscript appraisals: value for money?

I recently took the plunge and commissioned a manuscript appraisal for my novel. It was a significant step because there’s a cost involved and, like all of us, I wanted to feel there’d be real value in making the investment. I’m glad to say there was.

After a researching the market offering I approached The Writing Consultancy which has a wide range of editors to call on and great reviews from clients. The editorial expertise covers all genres as well as literary fiction. After an initial discussion, my manuscript was directed to Toby Venables who was able to professionally appraise my thriller. This was not a line edit but a review of the weaknesses and strength of the novel’s key components: plot, characters, narrative arc, pace, tone and so on.

The feedback was terrific, and by this I don’t mean glowing – although it was extremely supportive – rather I knew that the editor had completely understood my characters and their dilemmas. I was particularly chuffed that Toby got my sense of humour and appreciated every little plot twist. He told me which areas were strong and which could be tweaked to make the whole thing much slicker and more pitchable (I’ve just made that word up and I’m not sure Toby would approve).

I accepted every recommendation.
